Liquefied petroleum gas is widely used in rural areas due to the lack of centralized gas supply, while natural gas is the main gas source in cities. A reminder: before purchasing a gas water heater, please confirm which gas source you will use long‑term at home, and buy the matching gas water heater accordingly.
Gas water heaters on the market are mainly divided into forced‑exhaust type, balanced type, constant‑temperature type and condensing type. For their differences, you may refer to Xiao Xin’s previous article on gas water heater classification, which will not be repeated here. The following points cover key notes for household installation of gas water heaters:
- Professional installation: Whether purchased online or offline, gas water heaters must be installed by qualified professional technicians. The room where the water heater is installed shall be equipped with windows or ventilation holes communicating directly with outdoors to ensure good ventilation.
- No flammable articles such as furniture and alcohol shall be placed near the installation position. The installation area shall not be blocked by any obstacles.
- An exhaust flue must be fitted for the water heater. Otherwise, waste gas may accumulate indoors and easily cause carbon‑monoxide poisoning for occupants.
- There are specifications for the length of the flue pipe. Generally, the total length should preferably not exceed 3 meters. Excessively long pipes hinder smoke exhaust and may cause indoor air‑quality problems. The shorter the flue, the better. The section of flue extending outdoors shall be between 30 cm and 100 cm, and a wind cap shall be installed at the flue outlet.
- It is strictly forbidden to install the gas water heater inside bathrooms, to prevent poisoning caused by poor air circulation.
- For high‑rise buildings, only forced‑exhaust gas water heaters shall be adopted. The water‑heater flue must NOT be connected to public shared flues.
- Confirm your household gas source type before purchase and select the corresponding gas water heater. Read the user manual carefully. Perform regular maintenance and inspection on the water heater. For example, apply soapy water to pipe joints to check for gas leakage and avoid poisoning risks.
